Plain animated & static tables are passé and fast becoming an impediment in realizing the true value of information and business intelligence. The problem with current state of the art business intelligence tools are that they are all focused on the gathering, indexing and storing data in the most efficient and accurate manner. That’s great, but ask an end user how they feel about the reports presented to them, and the answer is usually not very pleasant. Most resort to Microsoft Excel or other cumbersome charting and graphing techniques. As we move into the era of Blue Ray DVD, online webinars and shorter attention spans, static graphical representations present very little in the way of an enriched user experience or generate a desire to explore more. Additionally reports that are presented over the web tend to completely lose the users sense of association between one data element and the other EVERY TIME the page or the graph refreshes.
Luckily the IT industry presents us with options that help us create powerful, truly interactive Data Visualization techniques that not only hold the users attention but allows the user to explore data in ways that were unthinkable earlier. What is Data Visualization? Simply put Data Visualization is the combination of behavioral sciences, art, technology and statistics to develop application that have the following attributes:
- Visual Elements: Use of visual elements such as color, shape, line and images/ illustration to increase the cognition of the data for the end users
- Movement: Users loose the visual connection every time the page is refreshed. Data Visualization ensures that there is animation or fine transition from one state to the other depending on user interaction without the refresh. This serves two purposes: keeps the user attention and more importantly, increases cognition of data comparison for elements such as “increase” and “decrease”.
- Visual Hierarchy: A visual connection between two or more data points that help users understand cause-effect, if-then and so on.
- Interactive Drill Downs: This is providing data about second and third layers without refreshing so that the user can go from summary representation to source data in interactive steps. For example: clicking on a section of the pie chart and getting another graph of the subset, further clicking on the subset and getting a table view of the source data.
